Caption: Thor Rhodin (1920-2006), US physicist. Rhodin obtained his doctorate from Princeton (1946). His subsequent career was spent mostly as an educator and researcher, starting at the James Franck Institute of the University of Chicago. He taught at Cornell University from 1958. His research and teaching work ranged from solid-state physics to Auger electron spectroscopy and other aspects of surface physics and surface chemistry. An active Quaker, he was a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists. Elected a fellow of the American Physical Society, he received the Humboldt Senior Scientist Prize (1986).
