Caption: Howard Percy Robertson (1903-1961), US physicist and mathematician. Robertson obtained his doctorate from the California Institute of Technology (1925), studying in Germany with Arnold Sommerfeld. In his career, Robertson worked on cosmology, quantum mechanics and relativity. Named for him are the Robertson-Schrodinger uncertainty relations (from the uncertainty principle), the Poynting-Robertson effect of sunlight on dust grains in space, and the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric (a solution of general relativity). He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1951.
