Caption: Berkeley cyclotron research. British-US physicist Wilfrid Basil Mann (1908-2001) working in 1937 on a cyclotron at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. Mann was awarded a doctorate in physics (1934) from Imperial College, London. This had been preceded by work in Copenhagen, Denmark. He then worked at Berkeley on the cyclotron developed by Ernest Lawrence. Mann was UK delegate to the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission (1946-1951). From 1951, he headed the Radioactivity Section at the US National Bureau of Standards, working there for over 30 years. He became a US citizen in 1959.
