Caption: Ward Plummer (born 1940), US physicist. Plummer obtained his doctorate in physics from Cornell University (1967), using field ion microscopy to study atomic binding. He has worked at the National Bureau of Standards, and then for 20 years between 1973 and 1993 at the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, he has worked at the University of Tennessee, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and at Louisiana State University. Awards received include the Davisson-Germer Prize in Atomic or Surface Physics (1983). He was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2006. Photographed circa 1983.
