Caption: The Linac II particle accelerator at DESY, the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. "Linac" is short for linear accelerator. The 70- metre long machine consists of two sections. In the first, electrons are accelerated to an energy of 450 MeV. They then hit a conversion target, usually a tungsten plate, which produces pairs of electrons & positrons (anti-electrons). The positrons, which have a low energy, are then separated & accelerated in the linac's second section to 450 MeV. They are then ready for injection into one of DESY's larger accelerators.
