Caption: Mycorrhizal fungus. Light micrograph of a zygospore, a reproductive structure, from the mycorrhizal fungus (Gigaspora margarita). Zygospores are diplod cells formed from the fusion of hyphae from two different mating types. Zygospoers remain dormant until conditions are favourable. They then germinate and form haploid vegetative cells. Mycorrhizal fungi are mutualistic symbionts living in the roots of many land plant species. At right are extramatrical (outside of the host plant) vesicles.
