Caption: Chart of the Atlantic Ocean from 'The New American Practical Navigator' (1802) by US mathematician and astronomer Nathaniel Bowditch (1773-1838). This chart includes information on ocean currents and trade winds. First published in 1802, this work was a valuable handbook on piloting, celestial and electronic navigating, oceanography and meteorology. It contained useful nautical charts and mathematical tables, along with a maritime glossary, and an account of a voyage from the USA to Madeira to demonstrate its rules of navigation. The work gained Bowditch a reputation as the founder of modern maritime navigation.
