Caption: Lunar liquid mirror telescope. Diagram showing the size of a giant liquid mirror telescope and comparing it to the Eiffel Tower (lower right). This possible future telescope is 1 kilometre wide and 1 kilometre tall. It would use a reflecting liquid as the primary mirror. The Moon's low gravity and lack of distorting atmosphere makes it an ideal location for such a telescope, which would use low-temperature ionic liquids, and be used for infrared observations. The Eiffel Tower is 324 metres tall. It was completed in 1889, in Paris, France, as the entrance arch for that year's Universal Exposition (World Fair).
