Caption: Whale autopsy. Conservationists carrying out an autopsy on an adult male short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus). The short-finned pilot whale, which is found throughout the world's temperate and tropical waters, is actually a large dolphin. It can be between 4 and 6 metres in length, and feeds on fish, squid and octopus. This whale is 4.5 metres long. The autopsy is being carried out to determine the exact cause of death, and to add to scientific knowledge of this animal. At lower right is Manuel Carrillo, founder and president of Tenerife Conservation. Photographed in the Canary Islands.
