Caption: Cro-Magnon 1 research. Researchers handling an endocast of the Cro-Magnon 1 fossil skull. 3D scans (background) were used to produce the endocast. This fossil, from an elderly male from around 28,000 years ago, was found in the Dordogne in southern France in 1868. Cro-Magnons were an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens). This 2010 study (by Balzeau and Grimaud-Herve) found that this specimen's brain was around a fifth larger than human brains today. Photographed at the Musee de l'Homme (Museum of Man), French National Museum of Natural History (MNHN), Paris, France.
