Caption: William Cuming (1714-1788), Scottish physician. Cuming was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he studied medicine, later qualifying as a medical doctor in 1736 in Rheims, France. From 1739, he lived in Dorchester, England, where as well as practising medicine he studied the history of the region. Cuming assisted the antiquary and historian John Hutchins (1698-1773) in preparing 'History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset' (1774). In 1752, he was awarded an honorary degree from Edinburgh and elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Artwork from 'Literary Anecdotes' (John Nichols, 1812).
