Caption: Frostbite. A young boy with severe frostbite of the toes seen in a hospital in 1943. Frostbite occurs when the skin and underlying tissue becomes frozen. This may lead to permanent damage, death of the tissues (necrosis) and infections such as gangrene. In severe cases, the affected tissues are amputated. Photographed during the Siege of Leningrad in 1943.
