Caption: Gamma ray astronomy. The French Signe-3 satellite seen in protective packaging prior to launch. Signe-3 was originally intended for launch on the French Diamant rocket, but when this programme was cancelled the satellite was launched on a Soviet Kosmos-3M rocket. Launch was on 17 June 1977 from the Kapustin Yar cosmodrome. Signe-3 carried a gamma ray telescope and a solar UV instrument. The satellite re-entered on 22 June 1979.
