Caption: Plant stems, 19th-century artwork. Stems are the parts of a plant that generally form above the ground, providing a support structure for the leaves, flowers, and shoots. The stems also transport water and nutrients from the roots to the rest of the plant. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana', an encyclopedia published in London between 1817 and 1845. Thirty volumes were issued in 59 parts, with 22,426 pages and 565 plates.
