Caption: Curiosity rover collecting Martian soil. View of a sample of Martian soil on the observation tray (round, upper right) of NASA's Curiosity rover. This was the first sample collected by Curiosity and was collected during the mission's 70th Martian day, or sol (16th October 2012). This image, taken by the rover's left Mast Camera, shows how wind or vibration or both affected the sample after delivery, moving much of it off the tray to the left in this view.
