Caption: Curiosity rover Martian soil analysis. Results of the first X-ray diffraction analysis of Martian soil performed by the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) experiment on NASA's Curiosity rover. This image reveals the presence of crystalline feldspar, pyroxenes and olivine mixed with some amorphous (non-crystalline) material. The sample was taken from the Rocknest site and is similar to volcanic soils in Hawaii.
