Caption: Glomerular capillary. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a transverse section through kidney tissue, showing a capillary from a glomerulus. Glomeruli filter waste products from the blood. This occurs through the narrow slits between interlocking pedicles - branching processes on the podocyte cells that encase the glomerular surface. Fenestrated endothelium lines the capillaries and is separated from the podocytes (around edges) by a basement membrane (thin grey line in box at left).
