Caption: Pendulum escapements. 19th century diagrams of anchor escapements for pendulum clocks. The devices, which regulate the clock, are controlled by the swing of the pendulum. The swing of the pendulum oscillates the anchor (upper part in bottom three diagrams at left), which turns the escape wheel. The escape wheel regulates the mechanisms that turn the hands of the clock. Engraving from 'Recherches sur les perfectionnements a introduire dans les pendules de cheminees' by Henry Robert and Charles Wheatstone (1857).
