Caption: Simulated room fire. Fire raging in a mock-up of a room used for testing fire detectors. The detectors in the room are designed to be able to tell the difference between an uncontrolled fire and false alarms such as flickering lights or candles. The detectors study heat fluctuations and smoke density before deciding if the fire is real using fuzzy logic algorithms. This prevents costly false alarms. This system has been used in AlgoRex fire detectors, manufactured by Cerberus, part of Siemens AG. This fire research is being done at Zurich University, Switzerland.
