Caption: View of the beginning of the Linear Accelerator or Linac at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago. About 500 feet (150 metres) long, the Linac takes protons from the Cockroft-Walton generator where they are produced & accelerates them to an energy of 200 MeV. They are then accelerated further in the Booster Accelerator before being injected into the 2 giant magnet rings that form Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator. The Tevatron can accelerate protons & antiprotons up to an energy of 1000 GeV (1 TeV). In the photo, the Linac is the blue tube that goes off to the right. (June '84).
