Flame test on potassium

Flame test on potassium

Rights Managed

Flame test on potassium. Potassium compounds give a distinctive lilac colour when placed in a flame. Potassium (symbol K) is a metallic element of group one of the periodic table. Flame tests are used to identify metal ions in a compound, as many metal ions show specific different colours. A platinum wire is used to hold the sample, as platinum does not itself colour a flame.
