Caption: Computer simulation of heat conduction in a gas. The gas is represented by spheres (atoms) moving randomly and colliding with each other. The left side is then heated (red) and the right side cooled (blue). This sets up a temperature gradient from left to right. Heat manifests as increased speed of the atoms, causing them to collide more energetically with their neighbours. This adds momentum to the atoms they collide with, energising those in turn. It can also be seen that the more energetic side of the gas has larger gaps between the atoms as a result of the more energetic collisions. This translates to the decreased density of warmer gases.
