NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase 1) is an enzyme produced by Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Klebiella pneumonia, but it can spread to other bacteria through horizontal gene transfer. The global spread of the gene that makes the enzyme could have catastrophic consequences, as carbapenems are the most widely-used treatment for bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. This enzyme is complexed with the carbapenem drug Faropenem.
