Caption: Sodium and water. Water being dropped onto metallic sodium. These react to form sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. The reaction is exothermic, enough heat is generated to melt the sodium and ignite the hydrogen. The flame shows the typical yellow colour of sodium ions. This reaction is characteristic of the Group I elements of the periodic table.
