Caption: Potassium and water. Water being dropped onto metallic potassium. These react to form potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. The reaction is exothermic, enough heat is generated to instantly melt the potassium and ignite the hydrogen. The flame shows the typical purple colour of potassium ions. This reaction is characteristic of the Group I elements of the periodic table.
