Caption: University College London. 19th-century artwork of University College London (UCL), founded in 1826 under the name London University. This building and its large dome were designed by the architect William Wilkins, and it is also known as the Wilkins Building. Construction began in 1827 on the site of Carmarthen Square. It is now the UCL Main Building. Artwork (by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd) from 'Metropolitan improvements; or, London in the nineteenth Century' (1828).
