Caption: Regent's Canal. 19th-century artwork of the junction of the Regent's Canal at Paddington, London. Regent's Canal was built between 1812 and 1820. The canal junction around Paddington was known as the Paddington Basin. A network of canals carried trade goods across the UK. By the middle of the 19th century, railways began to replace canals. Artwork from 'Metropolitan improvements; or, London in the nineteenth Century' (1828).
