Caption: Vertikal-1 on launch pad. The Soviet Vertikal-1' rocket seen prior to launch from Kapustin Yar on 28 November 1970. Vertikal-1 was an early mission of the Interkosmos program. It carried a payload of scientific instruments on a sub-orbital flight, reaching a maximum altitude of 487km. The instruments studied the geophysics of the upper atmosphere and solar radiation. It was carried on a R-5B launcher, a modified version of the SS-3 Shyster' missile.
