Caption: Moon rock. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of basalt from the Moon. Lunar basalts form the dark 'seas' on the surface of the Moon. They differ from Earth basalts by their high iron content (17-22% by weight), and are classified by their titanium content as the mineral ilmenite (from 1% to 13% by weight). This sample was returned from the Moon by the unmanned Soviet Luna 16 mission in 1970.
