Caption: Zond 3. Model of Zond 3, a spacecraft intended to go to Mars as part of the Soviet Mars 3MV project. It was launched on July 18th 1965, even though it was known that this was outside of the correct launch window and could never reach Mars. The spacecraft made a fly-by of the Moon on 20 July providing excellent images of the lunar far side. It continued on its journey, making test data transmission until all contact was lost.
