Caption: Road of Life. Military trucks seen crossing the frozen surface of Lake Ladoga in 1942. Ladgoa is on the outskirts of St.Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) and is the largest lake in Europe. During the siege of Leningrad in 1941-44, the road across the lake in winter was known as the Road of Life as it offered the only way to get supplies into the city.
