Caption: Soviet missile history. A monument to the launching of the first Soviet ballistic missile that took place on 18 October 1947. The missile was a R-1 (NATO reporting name SS-1 'Scunner'), a missile that was essentially a Soviet-made copy of the German V2 rocket. The R-1 could carry a high explosive warhead of 785kg over a range of 270km, with an accuracy of around 5km. The first launch was conducted at the Kapustin Yar range in Astrakhan oblast, western Russia. Photographed in 1984.
