Caption: Oil rig. The hull of the semi-submersible oil drilling rig 'Northern Lights' seen in a dockyard. The hull is fitted out with its platform and drilling equipment later. Semi-submersible rigs are classified as Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (MODUs). They are used for exploration as they can be easily moved between locations. In use, the buoyancy tanks in the hull are flooded so the bulk of the rig lies underwater. Photographed at the Vyborg Shipyard, Russia, in 2010.
