Caption: Yak-1. A Yakovlev Yak-1 fighter of the Soviet Air Force. The Yak-1 first flew in January 1940 and entered service in the same year. It was a single seat, single engined monoplane fighter made of metal and wood. Powered by a Klimov 880kW (1,180 hp) V12 piston engine, it could reach speeds of 592 km/h and had a service altitude of 10,050m. The Yak-1 was armed with a 20mm cannon and a 12.7mm machine gun. 8,700 Yak-1s were built between 1940-44, remaining in service until 1950.
