Caption: Mastocyte releasing histamine, animation. During inflammation injured mastocytes(mast cells) release histamine. This causes surrounding blood vessels to dilate and become more permeable. This allows immune cells such as leukocytes ,and blood plasma proteins to travel to the site of infection and heal injured tissue. At top right is a molecular diagram of a histamine molecule, with a structural representation of the molecule below it.
