Caption: 3D animation showing a new HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) particle which has been released into the extracellular space in an immature form. Proteinase enzyme becomes active within the virus particle, releasing HIV proteins and as the cell matures, we can see new proteins forming on the surface of the virion. These surface proteins (gp120) allow the HIV to bind with and infect further host cells.
