Caption: Timelapse of the Aurora borealis over a fjord. Also known as the Northern lights, this phenomenon is caused by the collision of high energy particles from the solar wind with atoms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermosphere). The charged particles are directed by the Earth's magnetic field to the polar regions meaning aurorae usually only occur between three to six degrees latitude. To the right the comet PanSTARRS (C 2011 L4) disappears over the mountaintop. Filmed near Tromso, Norway.
