Caption: Firemen with a water pump. 18th-century firemen operating a water pump to extinguish a fire in a building. This scene dates from 1733 and is from an old fire certificate. The pump is being operated by men tilting back and forwards on a platform, with one fireman directing the hose. Other firemen are bringing water to the pump from a well. This illustration was published in around 1887.
