Caption: Magnetar star. Computer artwork showing the magnetic field (lines) around a magnetar. Magnetar stars are a type of neutron star with an incredibly strong magnetic field (a million billion times stronger that Earth's). They are formed when certain stars undergo supernova explosions. The decay of the magnetic field causes the emission of high-energy electromagnetic radiation, including X-rays and gamma rays.
