Caption: RF units for accelerating protons in the Tevatron accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago. RF stands for 'radio frequency'; protons are accelerated by energy supplied by radio waves in copper cavities. As they circle the accelerator ring, the protons receive a small 'kick' each time they pass through one of the RF units.
