Caption: Cryofracture, animation. Cryofracture is a research technique that enables the cell membrane to be studied in detail. In this animation the two layers of the cell's plasma membrane are separated. The process involves a freeze-fracturing technique, which makes it possible to visualise the two parts of a phospholipid bilayer. As shown, some proteins belong only to the upper or to the lower layer.
