Caption: Pterodactyls in a Jurassic landscape. 19th-century artwork of pterodactyls (Pterodactylus) in a jungle landscape. These flying reptiles lived during the Late Jurassic period (150-148 million years ago). The first pterosaur genus to be identified, they had elongated jaws with teeth, a long tail and a wingspan of up to 1.5 metres. It is thought they fed on fish and other small animals. The pterodactyl at lower right is hunting a large dragonfly. Artwork from the 1865 English edition of 'The World before the Deluge', first published in 1863 by Louis Figuier, with illustrations by Edouard Riou.
