Caption: The War of the Worlds. Story illustration for the 1899 Dutch edition of the science fiction novel 'The War of the Worlds' (1898) by British author H. G. Wells (1866-1946). In this story, England is invaded by aliens from the planet Mars. The alien-controlled machines ('tripods') walked on three legs, had metallic tentacles, and caused immense destruction. The Dutch edition ('De strijd der werelden'), published in Amsterdam by Cohen Zonen, was illustrated by Jacobus Hendrik Speenhoff.
