Caption: Ballista being loaded. Artwork of a soldier loading and arming a ballista, a projectile weapon developed during Roman times. Earlier Greek versions are thought to date back to around 400 BC. Its maximum range was around 460 metres. Ballistae were used extensively by the Roman Army during its conquests and sieges.
