Caption: Smoking opium. 19th-century artwork of the drug opium being smoked in India. Opium is a drug prepared from the opium poppy. A pipe is used to inhale fumes from heated opium. The fumes contain the active alkaloids (such as morphine) that give the addict his high. This gouache artwork (opaque watercolour) is by an artist from Amritsar (north-western India). It dates from circa 1870.
