Caption: North Polar region, Dunhuang Star Chart. 8th-century representation of the stars in the northern polar region, as depicted on the Dunhuang Star Chart. This Chinese star chart was among thousands of manuscripts found in the Mogao Caves near Dunhuang in north-western China. Dating from around 700 AD, it consists of 13 panels arrayed from right-to-left on a scroll, showing the positions of 1345 stars. This image shows the thirteenth panel which uses a circular rather than cylindrical projection. The Big Dipper shape at lower centre is a star formation that forms part of the modern constellation of Ursa Major. The Chinese text names the stars.
