Caption: Mars Viking orbiter. Computer artwork showing a Viking space probe in orbit around the planet Mars. The Viking program consisted of a pair of US space probes, Viking 1 and Viking 2, sent to Mars. Each spacecraft was composed of two main parts: an orbiter (seen here) designed to photograph the surface of Mars from orbit, and a lander designed to study the planet from the surface. Viking 1 was launched on 20th August 1975 and Viking 2 on 9th September 1975.
