Caption: Crete-Athens battle. 13th-century artwork of a battle between naval and land forces during a war between Crete and Athens. Soldiers on a ship are attacking a castle on the shore. Such wars were common in the time of the city states of Ancient Greece (9th to 5th centuries BC). Histories written in the Middle Ages often depicted events in medieval style. Artwork from the French history book 'Li livre des ansienes estoires' (circa 1285).
