Caption: Antarctic Mirage. Daytime Inside the Antarctic Mountain Range taken from McMurdo Ice Shelf looking towards Mt. Erebus. Taken from 150 km away. Mirages are seen frequently in Antarctica. Early explorers used them to help see what lied beyond the horizon. When cold air temperatures are lower than the surrounding ice there is a vanishing line of sight and mirages such as this one occur. This mirage was captured in Antarctica at sunset. The roughly comma shaped continent of Antarctica is sliced neatly in half by the Trans-Antarctic mountain range separating West Antarctica fro East Antarctica. The mountain ranges stretches 3,500 km from Cape Adare to Coats Land.
