Caption: A molecular model of asparagine, a non-essential amino acid synthesized in the human body from oxaloacetate or also found in foods such as beef, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, soy, asparagus and whole grains. Asparagine has the ability to form hydrogen bond interactions with the backbone of peptide structures, capping or replacing other hydrogen bonds that would have otherwise occupied the area. In the nervous system, asparagine is involved in the synthesis of ammonia. Atoms are coloured dark grey (carbon), light grey (hydrogen), red (oxygen) and blue (nitrogen).
